You’ve got to live beyond yourself. It’s too much to get tangled up in, if you let all your emotional and commotional energy get tied up into what you like and don’t like, about everything not being perfect, about all the things you’re depressed about. Life is so much bigger than you and that is actually an answer. “You cannot live for yourself. You must live for something higher than you, something wider than you, something bigger than you, something better than you.” (Yogi Bhajan)
It’s way too easy to get lost in those incessant and recurring thoughts about the things in your life that are not great, problems that you have, things that aren’t the way you want them, and a thousand other things.
And there are so many tools available to get out of it!
1) Take any small step – any small step you can, and change begins
2) Go serve others. Really. Don’t just think about it, go do it. Serve in a homeless shelter, serve in a soup kitchen, serve in a halfway house, serve in a shelter for abused women and children, serve in an orphanage, serve in the peace corps, but just serve.
You can’t stay in all those messy thoughts when you are absorbed in the process of change (taking small steps), nor can you stay in those incessant and recurring thoughts when you are feeling compassion for someone else’s pain.
And the real beauty of this remedy is that it takes you outside the seemingly endless hamster-wheel thought processes that hold you hostage and keep you from really experiencing life.
So today – live a little beyond yourself and give yourself permission to live fully, live wholly, and live for something higher, wider, bigger and better than you.
Blessings.
