The Switch

Life just isn't always smooth. The most precise and perfect planner still can't control wind, rain, sun, and the unreliable nature of other people. Life just doesn't work that way.

But the problem with that doesn't really lie in the fact that things don't always work out, it lies in our inability to let go of our expected outcomes.

Even beyond expected outcomes, there is the simple fact that some things hurt, and some things are boring, and some things are frustrating and some things make us sad. Life is life, and having feelings isn't a bad thing. Clinging to them is.

Life isn't defined by how we feel about something. Our feelings are completely subjective and life, irregardless of them, will go about its business just the same. That said, it can still be super difficult to work through those times and here's why...because of our brains.

The best thing we can do is build some kind of switch - a prayer, a meditation, a good music mix, a stash of favorites on the DVR, a wild romp on a bike - and turn the mind to OFF position for a little while. Because, again, it's not the feelings that are a problem it's that we end up stuck on them. We need to let our feelings run their course, but the insistent workings of the mind does not aid in that. Feel what you feel, but stay unstuck by flipping the switch; giving yourself (and especially your head) a short break, getting a fresh perspective before coming back to it.

Blessings.
