There are two types of responses to any given situation in life - either we view it as a Growth Opportunity of sorts, or it fits into our concept of the Poor Me mentality.
There are 5 primary ways the Poor Me mentality acts out, and if we are not seeing every moment as a growth opportunity of sorts, then we are acting out in one or any combination of these ways:
1) we can check out completely and refuse to be present to deal with the situation
2) we can adopt the situation as further proof that the world is out to get us, and that we will never get enough or no matter what we get will be taken away
3) we can swallow enormous portions of anger, become totally resistant, and bludger our way through life
4) we can adopt very control freakish mannerisms
5) we can inwardly move to the country of De Nile, and invest only in our outward (safe) appearance
No matter which response mechanism we choose in the Poor Me category, we are always ensuring that we will be stopped, held back, limited, and that there is no possible way to grow our human spirit.
In the realm of Growth Opportunities, however, we have the opportunity to see any given situation, in any given moment, as a personal gift from God Himself. For every hard luck story of destitution, hard luck, abuse or poverty, there are countless stories of victory over the same conditions. And every story of success and victory is backed by an individuals' willingness to see the moment as a growth opportunity, rather than something sent to make him or her suffer.
It can be a discipline to learn to see life in this way, but look at the rewards it reaps! Instead of wallowing in suffering, pity, pain, and lethargy of spirit, we can jump up, arms outstretched, and shout, "Wahoo!" while we grow in spiritual stature, personal strength, overcome the negative in any situation and gain in every way! We can choose love (growth opportunity) over fear (poor me) and revel in the beauty and wonder of the universe God gave us.
Blessings.
