There's this thing about control that is absolutely baffling - it doesn't work. Ever. Not one of our tricks really works. No matter how we try to control a situation, we can't, and if, even for the slightest moment it does work, you can bet it is illusion and nothing but illusion.
The thing is though, it's hard to detangle what is a controlling action and what isn't. In the broader sense - that which we do to attain a specific and very defined reaction is control. But the reason it reaches so much further is because, for the most part, we aren't aware that we are doing it.
The only way to really know whether the actions you're in the middle of are of a controlling nature or not is to take inventory of the moment. If you find that you are completely immersed in the tangible, emotional and physical experience of the moment - you aren't in a controlling moment. If you take a breath and notice, wow, I am breathing and wasn't aware of that before, chances are you are pretty focused on an ego-centrified outcome and in some way shape or form using your thoughts, actions and words to control a situation.
Not easy. I know. But look at how much we miss when we're so incredibly immersed in trying to make things work the way we want them? We miss the brilliance of the sun shining just so on through the window in the evening. We miss the laughter of children. We miss an important look at a friend or partner. We miss our breath. We miss the most amazing part of life - what's happening right now.
So you can choose - you can keep up on the futile effort to control or you can move beyond the illusion of control and breathe in the vast and glorious way life is.
Blessings.
